FAMILYCAM MEDIA CONVERSION SERVICE FAQs |
| |
Can you digitise my video tapes and cine reels for me? |
Yes, if you live in the UK. We offer a professional video conversion service to help our UK members to populate their FamilyCam channels with their entire legacy home video collections and we take care of every step of the process. Our service is safe, reliable and, we believe, represents excellent value for members who simply don't have the time or the inclination to digitise and upload their video themselves.
This service is only available to UK resident members.

How do I book my Media for Conversion? |
You first have to become a registered member of Familycam. A standard free account will do.
Once you're logged into your account, select "CONVERSIONS" from the top navigation menu. In this section you can complete our Media Conversions Booking Form, telling us what media formats you want converted and how many of each. The form will give you an instant estimate of the final conversion cost and, if you approve, you can place your order. You will not be charged until we have completed the conversion work.
Once you place your order, we send you special packaging to help you send us your tapes, discs and/or cine reels safely. We digitise all your videos and put them into your FamilyCam account for you. Then we return your original media safe and sound.

| |
What Media types can you digitise for me? |
We can handle almost any typical home video media type, including 8mm and 16mm cine reels as well all standard camcorder tape formats and even some professional video tape formats.

What does your Media Conversion Service cost? |
For tapes and DVD camcorder discs, we charge a fixed cost per tape or disc. For cine reels we charge a small fixed cost per reel and a "per foot" cost that varies depending on the cine format and whether it has sound or is silent.

What is the end-to-end Media Conversion process? |
We've designed our media conversion service to be as safe and reliable as possible. You can track (online) the progress of your conversions at every step and we keep you fully informed all the way. The end-to-end process is as follows:
| |
Step One: You tell us what you want converted using our booking form. We estimate (immediately) what it will cost. You confirm your acceptance and the process begins. |
| |
Step Two: We send you special delivery packaging and a set of personalised media labels with unique barcodes that we use to track each of your precious items through the whole process. |
| |
Step Three: You place one of the labels we sent you on each item of your media (tapes, cine reels etc.), pack them and post them to us via your local Post Office. |
| |
Step Four: We confirm receipt at our bureau and convert all your video to very high quality "digital masters" (MPEG2 5Mbps = DVD quality). |
| |
Step Five: We then convert the digital masters to a set of streaming quality movies ready to be placed in your FamilyCam online movies collection. |
| |
Step Six: We invoice you (by email) and you pay the final invoice online using your credit card or PayPal account. |
| |
Step Seven: We return your original media items by recorded delivery. As an optional extra service, we can also send you a set of DVD data discs containing copies of your high quality digital masters. |
| |
Step Eight: We load the streaming quality movies into your FamilyCam channel. You can then check your movies, organise them into your movie categories in the order you want and give each movie a title and a description. |
| |
What is a Digital Video Master? |
When you use our media Conversion Service, the first thing we do is to create very high quality MPEG2 versions of all the video that we extract from your tapes, DVD discs and cine reels. These video files are the Digital Masters of your videos and they are at least equivalent to DVD quality (5Mbps). This quality is far too high for broadband streaming but it is perfect for archival and digital back-up storage.
We then convert (encode) your Digital Masters to streamable MP4 video at 768kbps and it is the MP4 versions of your movies that we put into your FamilyCam channel.
| |
What do you do with the Digital Masters at the end of the process? |
We keep your Digital masters for 90 days just in case anything goes wrong with the MP4 encoding process and we need to encode them again. After that, we delete them unless you ask us for copies.
| |
Can I order copies of my Digital Video Masters? |
Yes. In fact we want you to because they represent an ideal way to keep a digital back-up of all your home movies and you can always make more copies yourself.
When you book your media conversion, you can select an option to receive a complete set of your Digital Video Masters on DVD discs. We provide one DVD disc for each Digital Master, no matter whether the movie is 10 minutes or 2 hours long. All Digital Master back-up DVD discs can be read by Macs and PCs and all are supplied fully labelled.
| |
Can I play my Digital Master DVD discs in a DVD player? |
Yes, we supply your Digital masters on DVD discs that can be played on any DVD player or on any PC or Mac.
