FAMILYCAM VIDEO TAGGING & SEARCH FAQs

What is Tagging?
With FamilyCam, you can tag individual scenes in all your movies so that those scenes can later be found easily and watched instantly. A FamilyCam scene tag is a text description (that you write) of a scene in a movie coupled with a time point (at what time in the movie the scene occurs).

There is no limit to how many scene tags you can save and the more tagging you do, the more you'll enjoy searching your video for scenes you want to watch or to show other people.

How do I Create Scene Tags?
We've made this as easy as possible. All you have to do is watch a movie in your FamilyCam Channel. When you reach a scene you'd like to tag, you just click the "Tag This" button that appears underneath the video display.

When you click "Tag This", the FamilyCam player pauses your movie and displays a text box into which you can type your scene description. The time point at which you paused the video is captured automatically.

When you save your new tag, the video you were watching starts playing again so that you can move on and create some more tags.

How Does the Scene Search Work?
Once you've created some tags, you and your invited guests can search them using the Scene Search in the FamilyCam channel. If the words in your search phrase match any of the words in your scene tags, you will see a set of Google-like search results showing the matched tags and still images corresponding to the time points of the scenes that are described in the tags.

To play any of the scenes in your search results, you can click on the still image next to the search result and that scene will play immediately.

Can my Invited Guest Groups Create Tags?
No. Only you, the account holder, can create scene tags. But both you and your invited Guest Groups can search your tags in the Familycam channel at any time.

What is the Tag Dictionary?
The Tag Dictionary is an alphabetical list of all the significant words that occur in all of your scene tags. It's like an index and it helps remind you and your invited guests what sort of words can be searched for amongst all your tags.

To make things easy, you can click on any of the words displayed in your Tag Dictionary and this will immediately run a search of that tag word. Words that occur more frequently in your entire set of scene tags are displayed larger and in a more bold font than words that only occur once or twice.

How do I Edit or Delete Tags?
If you notice that you've made a spelling error in a tag or you want to delete a tag completely, you can do this in the My Tags section of the Familycam web site. You must be logged in as the account holder to access this section.

What should I write in my Scene Tag Descriptions?
You can write anything you want up to a limit of 255 characters (about 30 words). You can write full English sentences describing what's going on in a scene and who's in the scene, or you can just write a list of the significant words and names without punctuation or connective words like "of", "and", "the" etc.

Please note that the when you run a Scene Search, words shorter than 3 letters are ignored and so are connective words like like "and", "the", "when" etc.

It's important when writing a tag to think of what you and your invited guests might later want to search for. For example, be careful when writing names. You might always use a short name such as "Fred" but other people might try to search for "Freddy" or "Frederick".

It's also important to take a long term approach. You might write a tag such "Freddy playing in the garden at home". But if you move house later on, you may not think of your old house as "home", so it might be better to use the house name or the street name.
